After using social media for hours, the setting was more solitude. The time was spent with that small rectangular electronic in famous platforms rather than completing the duty. My head was being blocked from thinking. I was hunched over, had eye strain, and my head was exploding after seeing the news. I was feeling a sense of discomfort from all hours being in the same place. As said by Germany Kent: “Be aware of and attentive to the time you spend as an online spectator.”
The past two years, my daily pattern was staying in social networks for hours long, and today I am present in commitment tasks.
Teens, kids and adults shouldn’t use social media apps excessively for more than 3 hours continuously, since it impacts their mental health. When platforms, such as Tik Tok, Whatsapp, Instagram, Youtube, for instance are used excessively, they are harmful for the users.
In addition, when teens spend more than 2 hours continuously on social media, they get more isolated. According to the World Health Organization: “Between 17–21% of individuals aged 13–29-year-olds reported feeling lonely, with the highest rates among teenagers. About 24% of people in low-income countries reported feeling lonely — twice the rate in high-income countries (about 11%).”
The evidence proves that many teenagers are lonely. This is associated with spending hours after hours on social media, since it’s something common among teenagers. Adolescents should start communicating more with others daily, engaging in the conversations and having fun. I believe that they have enough credibility and intelligence to make wise choices.
As explained by Medical Sciences, “Most medical students (63%) showed moderate and 34% showed high academic procrastination. Social media addiction was highly correlated with academic procrastination (r=0.539)”
People procrastinate much because they spend more time on social media than what they should, instead of completing assignment deadlines. Another example of procrastination is staying on online networks instead of doing physical activity. The lack of motivation is directly associated with procrastination. People’s academic skills are suffering! This is an issue that needs to be faced!
According to Nanyang Technological University “68 per cent of young respondents said social media harms their ability to focus”. As mentioned by the News Medical Life Science: “The study found that 68 per cent of youth participants reported difficulty focusing”. “Over time, this reduces our ability to focus or engage in deep thinking.”
People’s concentration is also being impacted because they stay more than 2 hours continuously on social media. Therefore, the ability to concentrate on Instagram news, learning from a youtube video, as well as, communicating in whatsapp gets much harder. The more time is spent on social media, the difficult it gets to concentrate on something that relies on learning because of information overload.
On the other hand, Social media is a great tool to use moderately. If people spend a maximum of 3 hours continuously on social media, it enhances engagement. Also, people don’t stay too isolated. As well as, they don’t procrastinate that much. Can get educated by seeing local news on platforms such as Instagram and youtube videos. It’s a great way to communicate with people like family and friends; including that it makes people relax at a certain period of the day.
Besides, kids, teens and adults that use media excessively, should change this habit since it affects their mental health. All of you that use social media should set an alarm to be in track of time usage. Specifically, parents, you are older and can limit your sons and daughters time in social media by talking with them with a serious tone. Friends of people who use social media, what you can do is remind the users of the time spent in the apps.
Overall, Adults, Teens, and Kids should stop utilizing social media for more than 3 hours continuously in a day because it affects their mental health. This is a worry for Adults, teens, and kids. One solution is for people to set up timers that keep them in track of how much time is being spent in social media apps. Another solution is for parents to limit the time that their sons and daughters spend in these apps. Parents, you are older and are aware of the impacts on the mental health of who lives near you.
