This past Tuesday, the halls of the school felt unusually empty, the lunch lines were shorter and the senior lounge was empty. The teachers arrived with the lessons planned, only to walk into silent classrooms.
Opening up the attendance sheet only to find no one responding to their names. Only to realize it was an unofficial tradition: Senior Skip Day!
This was no coincidence. The seniors planned and executed Senior Skip Day very well. It’s a tradition celebrated around the world. Though unofficial, it is a student-led celebration of the final year of high school.
As mentioned by the seniors interviewed, Senior Skip Day is usually organized by the StuCo as an event by the students for the students. This year’s planning began with a small WhatsApp group of three girls. A date was chosen, students signed up, paid a small fee for what many called unforgettable memories, and helped prepare for the event. Two buses were booked to take the Class of 2026 to the house where the day’s activities took place.
From the preparation to the execution, everything was surprisingly structured and done well. From the food, music and games like soap football and inflatable games. It definitely showed leadership and trust among the students. The different setting, and the different activities encouraged the students to mix together and interact more freely. “It definitely brought the class together,” “It was super fun!” the seniors said. “It’s a tradition that should definitely be followed next year.” The environment and this opportunity may have led many to feel a stronger sense of community within their class.
The majority of seniors participated, though some still came to school due to prior commitments such as track meets. Their day looked different from usual, with most classes turning into free blocks rather than regular lessons. Several students mentioned that it became a great opportunity to bond with their teachers, as the atmosphere throughout the day felt noticeably more relaxed.
Some teachers were completely unaware until the day of Senior Skip Day. Others only found out when a few students showed up for class and mentioned it. Although some may have suspected something, they did not expect it to happen on such a large scale or with such coordination. One teacher commented, “It’s fascinating how the students came together to organize something like this. It shows a lot of unity and organization among them.” At the same time, some teachers expressed frustration and disappointment. One teacher suggested that while it can be a meaningful tradition, choosing a date during a time when finishing course content is already challenging may not be the best choice.
Most students agreed the experience was worth it and had no regrets. Both teachers and students noted that it can be a meaningful tradition that brings the senior class closer together. With all the different schedules, the IB exams, the graduation, this may be one of the last times the whole senior year is together. Ultimately, Senior Skip Day is not simply about missing a day of school, it’s about shared memories and the class coming together before everyone goes their separate ways.
