The Grammys

The 57th-annual Grammy Awards was held last Sunday, 8 February at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Sam Smith was the highlight of the night, taking home four awards, one was for Best New Artist and another for Record of the Year (“Stay With Me”). Another major hit of the night was Beck. No, not Ms. Beck. Rather, Beck the rock star won the awards for Rock Album and Album of the Year for Morning Phase. Of course, the power couple Jay-Z and Beyoncé won the R&B award for “Drunk in Love.” Pharrell Williams also scored an award for Best Pop Solo, for his big hit, “Happy.” In a blast from the past, AC/DC came on stage with one of their most popular songs “Highway to Hell,” then Ariana Grande slowed things down with her new hit “Just a Little Bit of Your Heart.”

Even US President Obama had a role in the event via video message, where he talked about the issue of violence against women and girls and how it must end. His speech led into Katy Perry’s performance of “By the Grace of God.” The award show ended with Beyoncé dressed in white singing: “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” before John Legend and Common joined in singing “Glory” from the movie Selma. It was a night to remember.
