Every morning from Monday to Friday the automatic doors unlock and a fresh breeze drifts through the library. The pages of the books rustle quietly hoping that someone will read them soon. The front desk computers turn on, the lights brighten up the place, the printer turns on with a beep and the chairs settle into their places. The library prepares itself for the rush of students throughout the whole day.
The mornings are usually slow with ambitious students walking in to prepare before their first block. Some rush in to print crucial assignments before the clock hits 8:30. During the first free block students enter quietly after signing in, settling in with all their work laid out in front of them. The library fills in with meetings and room reservation. Ideas bounce across the room and learning becomes collaborative. The library becomes a place for quiet focus, where students have meetings, critical discussions over their opinions or just quite productive work.
Then flex rolls in with Mondays and Thursdays being occupied with community time. Students sit in a circle discussing new topics every week from sustainability to school life tips. On other days groups of friends walk in with lots to say, finding the perfect spot to settle into. The library may become a little noisy during this however it becomes very lively. Energy fills in the room with conversations, ideas and laughter. This is the most vibrant part of the day for the library.
In these moments the importance of the library becomes clear. It isn’t just a room full of shelves with books, it is a space for concentration, for curiosity, for idea development and a place where deadlines are met and projects take shape. More than that it’s a place where students feel comfortable exploring their thoughts whether through lively discussions or quiet study sessions. The library quietly shapes students’ days providing a space where they can feel both productive and comfortable.
The next two blocks begin, with middle schoolers sometimes, walking in during their English classes, getting some great advice from the librarians regarding what books they should borrow. The students walk around trying to find and figure out which book they find most interesting and checking it out. When they do, they proceed to check it out and happily take it home with a goal to read it and bring it back safe and sound.
3:30 hits and the school day ends, but the library still stays active. Students come in in order to complete their homework or prepare for the next day. Some gather in study groups for detailed study sessions, or to debrief their days with friends. At the front desk, books are renewed or dropped off in the drop box. About one hour later, a reminder from the librarian echoes throughout the library letting students know the library is closing. Students pack their bags, unplug their devices, and slowly head out.
At 4:30 the computers are turned off, the printer turns off with a beep, the chairs are tucked in and the lights are turned off. The automatic doors are locked as the library prepares itself for the next day. It awaits all the smiles, the intellectual minds, the stressful students and the curious thoughts.
