At some point this year, it was pretty obvious how much everyone started dressing alike. Not forced, not a uniform, but in a more subdued way. Those Birkenstocks just keep popping up, the same neutral colors, the same oversized hoodies, the same look over and over. It’s kinda subtle, but once you notice it, you can’t really unsee it. It starts to feel less like random outfits and more like a pattern. You start recognizing it before you even think about it, like you already know what someone’s outfit is going to look like before you fully see it.
It’s interesting because everyone still feels like they’re choosing what they wear. No one is trying to copy anyone on purpose. If you ask people, they’ll say they just like the look, that it’s comfortable, or that it’s simple. And that’s probably true. It doesn’t feel fake. It doesn’t feel like following a trend. It feels like preference. But that’s where the original question comes in,
Is it actually choice, or just a really effective trend that feels like choice?
If everyone is independently “liking” the same thing at the same time, it’s hard to say it’s fully independent. A lot of it comes from what we’re constantly seeing. The same outfits show up online again and again, and after a while they stop looking like trends and just start looking normal. It’s not something you question, it just becomes what looks right. So when you wear something that fits that look, it doesn’t feel like you’re copying anything. It just feels right.
At the same time, there’s still an unspoken boundary. You can go a little outside of it, but not too far. If you do, it stands out immediately. Even if no one says anything, you feel it. So people adjust without really thinking about it, not because they have to, but because it’s easier. It’s more comfortable to stay within what already feels accepted than to risk standing out in a way you didn’t mean to.
So maybe it’s not really fashion or prison, but something in between. People are choosing their outfits, but those choices are shaped by what’s already been decided to look good. And once you notice that, it’s hard not to question how much of your style is actually yours.
