PGC at Graded is basically a Hunger Games. But instead of weapons, juniors use hugs, compliments, and suspiciously enthusiastic conversations with Maggie.
This time of year, we juniors breathe it and the seniors scare us into wanting it more. Maggie becomes a celebrity: swamped with gifts, hugs, and all the care in the world. We all want to come off as supportive and mature when deep down we are all fighting for limited spots in the program.
So, I did what we were all scared to do: I asked Maggie Moraes some questions.
Here are my key take aways on how to survive the current PGC application season:
“Does reading the Talon increase one’s chance of becoming a PGC?”
“Definitely. Not only does reading the Talon make you more aware of Graded student’s interests’ and open to different perspectives, it demonstrates your passion for writing, which I obviously appreciate. I mean, it is not like I have a bias or anything like that, but I can see who opens the Talon and what they read.”
“When is the final 2026-2027 PGC list coming out?”
“Hmmmm…How about this? Comment on 5 Talon articles you are interested in and I’ll tell you! But don’t tell others. If you do, your application will be denied.”
(This was said completely seriously. Straight face. No jokes. At all.)
“What is something people think is more important for PGC than it actually is?”
“People will say “leadership,” “empathy,” “commitment.”
All great. On paper.
But in reality?
The real skills are surviving awkward icebreakers with freshmen, pretending you’re not completely drained after all the forced enthusiasm, and somehow managing to look supportive and put together at the exact same time.”
“What is something people think is less important for PGC than it actually is?”
“Baking skills.
No one talks about it, but PGC is basically powered by snacks and emotional support. Show up with brownies once and suddenly you’re everyone’s favorite PGC. It’s a strategy!”
Approaching the release date, we start to realize PGC is not that intense. It’s not about being Maggie’s and Ms Serra’s best friend or showing seniors your school spirit, but actually if you embody what PGC is looking for. And if you don’t, say it with me: it is not that dramatic.
But just in case, you should probably still read the Talon…and comment on 5 articles…
